|About the Book|
Ms. Brown is a native of New Mexico. She was raised in a family who were firm supporters of the military. She started adopting soldiers in the fall of 2006 after hearing from a soldier that there were a large number of soldiers that never received mail on base. Since November of 2006 she has adopted and supported over twenty-two soldiers. In November of 2006, Gertie was adopted from the local animal humane association as a puppy, and she would write to the soldiers about her and what she was learning once a week. The letters from Gertie started in January 2007 as a way to boost the morale of the soldiers since they were far away from their families and homes and in need of encouragement. Each letter is about a day in her life from learning to bark, to go outside and learning commands like sit, stay, and down. Every letter that is mailed from Gertie is stamped with a paw print at the bottom of the letter. Both front and back of the envelope carries that paw print with her name written across the return address stamp.
