Fled accountancy to the University of Sussex, where he was given his three degrees. The last of these, a doctorate, was published as The Poetry of Keats: Language and Experience, a Heideggerian interpretation of the poet. He has also published other work on Keats, as well as on Blake and Nietzsche, and reviewed widely. His latest, Nietzsche’s Footfalls, a mediation on the philosopher and his times, came out in 2003.Pollard’s intensive, ontological meditations on loss, language and ‘the death of God’, creativity and the failure of writing, are quite wonderful and wholly unexpected. So we end up with a professional philosopher who lectures in both philosophy and literature who produces his first book of poetry in his sixties - a pretty heady later flowering - there’s nobody remotely like him. - Simon Jenner
