There is, however, one bizarre term of the Last Will and Testament: in order to receive everything, including the posh Manhattan apartment, you have to endure one winter in rural Spain, namely the province of Soria. Thus begins A Winter in Soria, a completed 40,000-word literary novel based on the journal of one non-conformist Latina woman, Melany. Against the harsh, biting backdrop of the rustic countryside, we meet a variety of warm, colorful characters whose stories of fortitude transform our protagonist. In just a few short months, she is incorporated into the charming “retro” village. When winter eventually turns to spring, she moves to New York City to claim her inheritance and thereby transform her financial situation as well. The apparently comfortable urban lifestyle doesn’t last long, however- the death of two Sorian friends takes our heroine back to Spain, initially for a visit, but ultimately, she decides to purchase an inn and settle there. This is a novel about endings as new beginnings, weathering the elements, and finally, literature as resistance to obscurity.
